The combination of fluorouracil and salicylic acid (FU/SA) is prescribed in a topical solution or cream for treating actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinoma, psoriasis, viral warts, and other dermatological conditions. For actinic keratoses a cream with 0.5% fluorouracil and 10% salicylic acid is used.
5-Fluouracil: 5-FU is a chemotherapeutic agent that inhibits pyrimidine metabolism (inhibits cell growth so that actinic keratoses do not develop into skin cancer).
Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a topical keratolytic agent. It is used to remove excess keratin in hyperkeratotic skin disorders such as common and plantar warts, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, calluses, and corns. It works to remove the top layer of skin so that the fluorouracil can be more effective and works by causing desquamation of the horny layer of skin.
